Wild

Title of the Book: Wild
Author: Cheryl Strayed
Number of Pages:311
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Wild, by Cheryl Strayed tells the story of a solo woman hiking the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) that runs from California to Canada and covers roughly 2,659 miles. Strayed decides to take on this hike after losing her mother and she goes on a journey of self-discovery on her way to Oregon.

She overcomes encounters with bears, rattlesnakes, hiking boots that are too small, and reflections of her life and what put her on the trail. You meet other hikers that she encounters and you camp along with her every mile of her journey. You learn more about her life and the relationship she had with her mother and what makes this journey so meaningful.
This book is unique to other stories like this because Strayed writes in such a personal and relatable way that makes it seem like you are having a conversation with her in person. The language and vocabulary she uses is easy to understand and it allows you to follow along with the story until the very end. From the first page, you are thrown right into the middle of her journey, and you won’t want to stop reading until she reaches her destination. She tells the story in a way that makes you feel like you are there, you want to complete the trail with her and you also want to make it to Oregon and have that sense of triumph and completion from the moment you read the prologue.

I think people get stuck at a place in their life they don't understand that they have the power to change it. Cheryl talks about her life and some of the choices she made that lead her to hike the PCT. You feel for her in certain situations and you also might become frustrated with some of her choices and ways of coping with situations. I know that as I was reading, I was completely captivated by her story and the way she told it.

I would recommend this book to everyone. I found it to be thrilling, touching, motivational, and moving. I think every type of person would enjoy this book because they will not only learn about Cheryl and her self-discovery, but they will also discover just how wild it is to let it be.

  3. I have heard this book was good, but every time I look at the reviews of it I decided not to read it. The review you wrote made it sound like a book I'd like to read. Your paragraph about the way she uses language to make the reader feel like she was having a conversation with the reader and that she makes the reader feel like they are there with the author made the book seem really appealing.
